Symposium Speaker, Danica Maier, Associate Professor in Fine Art, NTU

Danica Maier is an Associate Professor in Fine Art at Nottingham Trent University, where she runs the Summer Lodge, an annual 2-week artists’ residency. She completed an MFA in painting before receiving an MA in Textiles. Her work uses site-specific installations, drawing, and objects to explore expectations, while using subtle slippages to transgress propriety.

Danica’s work plays with disrupted repetition (the un-repeating-repeat), the glitch and line, while using subtle slippages and moments of detail to transgress propriety.  Understated visual cues requires the viewer to spend time with the work to encounter these moments of hidden depth found within the materiality. Once seen these subtle transgressions can compel the viewer to think twice about the expected norm they see around them every day.

Looking Again  is a performative reading  that Danica is contributing to the symposium which will ‘show’ rather than ‘tell’. Enacting the subject of pattern and chaos, through unfolding a deteriorating repetition within its reading the presentation will include practice-based images of Danica’s work to accompany the spoken ideas. Key focus within the paper will draw on: attention, detail and curiosity; the hidden and overlooked; the whole verse the single; the un-repeating, repeat; texts’ transformation into the decorative.
